Total Knee Replacement SurgerY

Karyn’s recovery from Total Knee Replacement Surgery

It isn’t uncommon for people over 40 to often have a swollen knee that hurts when they bend or walk. This isn’t surprising, as the cushioning inside the knee often wears down and becomes fragile with age. It can deteriorate without any injury. The protective cartilage can disintegrate and is susceptible to further damage.

Post total knee replacement recovery

Karyn has been a committed, focused and a hard working client at Elite Wellness in Ashburn, VA. Everyone got to know her struggle with her knee problem as well as her determination to do everything it takes to get stronger.

We asked Karyn a few questions to share her preparation and recovery experience.

What was your reason to start Group Strength Training before your knee replacement surgery?

I have always done yoga classes but wanted to add strength training to gain muscle. This is even more important as I’m not as young anymore; recovery takes a lot longer as I age.

Training on my own at regular gyms was an exercise in frustration: equipment not being available when I needed it put me off my plans. Since 2014 my knees have gotten progressively worse. As an avid gardener, years of digging in hard soils and not being strong enough to care for them took the ultimate toll. I decided to join Elite Wellness in July 2022 and can honestly say that I’ve never been more fit and strong. Even though I couldn’t do the walking I wanted to, I didn’t stop working out at Elite. I love being able to challenge myself with new gains as I turn 65 this year!

How is Elite Wellness the right place to help you achieve your goals?

“The difference at Elite is incredible. The trainers are highly skilled and attentive. They prepare a curated series of exercises and have all the equipment ready, so I can focus on doing my best during each session. The workouts rotate focus areas and intensity to keep me progressing.

What truly sets Elite apart is the trainers’ knowledge and dedication. They always monitor my form, offer modifications if needed, and are genuinely invested in preventing injuries. It’s a far cry from the crowded, impersonal atmosphere of franchise gyms.

I also appreciate how clean and well-maintained the equipment always is, creating a safe space for me to train. Plus, the connection among class members is wonderful. We may grumble during tough routines, but we support each other to improve and push past our limits.”

What is the outcome of your total knee replacement surgery?

“According to my Physical Therapist, I’m not the average Total Knee Replacement patient because I did so much preparation and training before the surgery. Now I’m able to resume much of my regular activities with some exceptions. I regained much of the mobility and flexibility ahead of the expected time frames and was able to return to classes only 9 weeks after.

Talking to the staff at Elite was very helpful as I was thinking about the replacement. There are so many things to think about an prepare for. Finally I was ready to make a decision to get my right knee replacement in March, 2025 – feeling physically ready for the challenge. Achieving my goal to prepare was made possible with the support I got at Elite Wellness.”
