RESTING METABOLIC RATE (RMR) TESTING

RESTING METABOLIC RATE: DETERMINE IF YOU HAVE A FAST OR SLOW METABOLISM

Resting metabolic rate (RMR) is the number of calories an individual burns while at rest, and includes movements of light activities such as brushing your teeth and walking to the car. This test measures RMR using indirect calorimetry which measures respiratory gas exchange and heat generated indirectly to compute an estimation of calorie expenditure. Specifically, our metabolic cart measures oxygen utilization/consumption. The more oxygen an individual needs and uses the more energy is required, thus, the more calories will be burned throughout the day.

THE TRUTH IS IN THE SCIENCE

  • A marker for metabolism

  • Indirect calorimetry is more accurate than prediction equations

  • Knowing an individual’s RMR can help health care professionals create nutritional and performance programs

  • RMR is linked to how the heart, lungs, and other major organ systems function while at rest
