FROM MANY SURGERIES TO A MARATHON RUNNER

NAME: Lori Collette

SPORT: A New Marathon Runner

INJURY: 2020 – shattered ankle, broke both tibia and fibula (closed displaced pilon fracture) at the same time, dislocated shoulder, teared bicep tendon, rotator cuff, labrum and chipped a bone.

SURGERIES:

Since the accident, 5 ankle surgeries and one shoulder surgery. Primary concern being the ankle with setting the bone first with an external fixator (6/14/2020), then setting the bones back into place with 26 screws and 3 plates (6/25/2020), followed by two infections which had to be cleaned back out on 7/24/2020 and again on 1/14/2021 which at that time they removed all the screws and plates. The final surgery on my ankle was doing a full ankle replacement on 2/11/2022.

July 2022 discharged from Physical Therapy.

PERSONAL TRAINING AT ELITE: Started in October 2022.

“Looking to the future, I have already signed up for two more 5k’s, one in May and back to Disney in November. I am also looking at running the 5k in Chicago while cheering on my friends who are doing the Chicago Half Marathon. Maybe one day.”

“In November 2022, I was able to complete the Disney Wine and Dine Challenge which is a 10K and Half Marathon on back to back days with my new ankle!! The 10K went well, however the half was more than I was ready to do, however, mind over matter, I was able to finish them both. It also told me I still had a long way to go. With that knowledge, I have continued my training at Elite Wellness with my amazing trainer, Allie!!

By December, I could actually start to see muscle tone coming back into my left calf and the rest of my body for that matter. Just the ability to flex and see something muscle tone was exciting. It’s the little things I forgot what it was like to be able to do, for example walking down the stairs I had been holding on to the railing. Then one day, I just bounced down the stairs not even thinking about the railing. It’s those everyday tasks I took for granted when I was healthy and strong.

Since then, this past Spring Break, I traveled to AZ to visit family with my daughter, Cadence. We spent the trip playing Pickle-ball and hiking Superstition Mountain, which there is no way I would have been able to hike up a mountain without the strength and balance training over the prior 6 months.

Looking to the future, I have already signed up for two more 5k’s, one in May and back to Disney in November. I am also looking at running the 5k in Chicago while cheering on my friends who are doing the Chicago Half Marathon. Maybe one day.”
